Model answer
Scrum has five events, and each is a formal chance to inspect and adapt.
- The Sprint is the container for all other events: a fixed length of one month or less in which a usable increment is created.
- Sprint Planning starts the Sprint. The team decides why the Sprint is valuable (the Sprint Goal), what can be done, and how the chosen work will get done.
- Daily Scrum: a 15-minute event for the Developers to inspect progress toward the Sprint Goal and adapt the plan for the next day.
- Sprint Review: the team presents the outcome to stakeholders, gathers feedback, and discusses what to do next, adjusting the Product Backlog.
- Sprint Retrospective: the team inspects how the Sprint went regarding people, interactions, processes and tools, and plans improvements.
The events are time-boxed to avoid waste: a Sprint Planning is at most 8 hours for a one-month Sprint, and the others are shorter in proportion.
Key points
- Five events: Sprint, Planning, Daily Scrum, Review, Retrospective
- Each exists to inspect and adapt something specific
- All are time-boxed; the Daily Scrum is 15 minutes
Likely follow-ups
- What is the difference between the Sprint Review and the Retrospective?
- Who attends each event?
Common mistakes
- Using the Daily Scrum as a status report to the manager
- Treating the Sprint Review as a demo only, with no feedback or backlog changes
